Master Builders Tasmania — Excellence Award Winner

Dwelling Construction over $750k

This breath taking home was created for a growing family, their friends and business associates. Set in a secluded bush setting with 180 degree views of mountains, river, bush and pasture the home blends cleverly into its environment with a intelligent use of rockand timbers. The owners achieved their desire to create an energy efficient home suited to the Tasmanian environment by utilising water recycling methods, composite timber and aluminium double-glazed windows, and advanced electrical systems. Fire protection was always a high priority.

The Chalet/Office, a short distance from the home, has enabled the owners to find a true and effective balance between family and business commitments. The unique exterior of the residence combines bush stone, cedar boarding and colorbond wall cladding.
18m of glass wall, punctuated only with timber clad steel columns and encircling the kitchen, living and dining areas , provides an uninterrupted view of the Leven River. The use of exposed blackwood and laminated roof beams together with black wood timber flooring fixed over the suspended concrete slab gives the living area a distinctive ambience. A border of floor tiles allows for the retention of heat and prevents sun damage to the timber flooring.

The swimming pool is pivotal to the living and entertaining areas of the home including the Cinema and Games Room. Special features for the quieter times of the day were created in the Library which has a feature window that captures the late afternoon sun overlooking the mountain and books are displaced using triple sliding Tasmanian Oak book cases. Ingenious use of all the available space has also created "The Cellar", literally a hidden retreat for the avid wine lover.

Working with Mead Con, the owners have been able to combine their love of timbers and natural building materials with the convenience of modern technology to create this gem — the perfect environment for their family.
